I create art inspired by nature in a realistic and painterly style, deeply influenced by the impressionist movement and the evocative effects of light on various subjects. My subject matter includes marine and seascape art, landscapes, architectural themes, and figurative beach scenes, both above and below the water's surface. The creative process encompasses both plein air and studio work, often utilizing smaller paintings for studies. I have transitioned from a formal art education that emphasized the technical skills of photorealism to a current passion for a more painterly depiction of realism. I aim to infuse my work with atmospheric vibrancy, selecting subjects rich in color and light. I'm captivated by the interplay of light and shadow on the sails of a schooner, as well as the hull of the ship cutting through the open sea's waves. Additionally, I find inspiration in the architecture of turn-of-the-century fishing harbors like Provincetown, often depicted in hand-colored vintage postcards, and I strive to bring those scenes to life with a realistic palette. The warm light of Miami's art deco architecture and the figurative beach scenes on South Beach represent my intent to capture rich tropical hues through a greater textural application of paint. I aim to let colors blend optically without overpainting or excessive blending. Using a waterproof camera, I take photographs in the ocean to capture close studies of the light filtering through southern Florida's ocean waves, which I then use to compose large realistic wave paintings that make the viewer feel as though they are immersed in the water.
