Horseshoe crab molts can be found along the south face shores of Cape Cod all year long in abundance. The primitive creatures are related to spiders more than anything in the ocean and their blood has been in the forefront of biomedical research.

Horseshoe crabs molt or shed the outer shell intact . I clean the shell by soaking in a bleach solution for several days. The entire outer shell is painted with Kiltz to block out color irregularities. The inside of the shell is fitted with a styrofoam mold. The design and background colors are painted with oil based sharpies. The entire shell is sealed with a fixative. Felt is applied to the back.
