Renewable resource for painting.
Horseshoe crab molts can be found along the south face shores of Cape Cod all year long in abundance. These primitive creatures, more closely related to spiders than anything else in the ocean, have inspired many original paintings. Their unique characteristics have also been captured in art for sale, including stunning oil on canvas pieces. Additionally, their blood has been at the forefront of biomedical research.
Horseshoe Crab Art
Horseshoe crabs molt or shed their outer shell intact. I clean the shell by soaking it in a bleach solution for several days. The entire outer shell is painted with Kiltz to block out color irregularities, making it an ideal canvas for art for sale. The inside of the shell is fitted with a styrofoam mold. The design and background colors are painted with oil-based sharpies and can resemble original paintings. Finally, the entire shell is sealed with a fixative, and felt is applied to the back.
